autobiographical installation ‘Labyrinth (My Mother’s Album)’ in the Ilya and Emilia Kabakov show ‘Not Everyone Will Be Taken Into the Future’ @tate until 28 Jan. • • The corridors curve in a spiral, and on their walls - decorated to resemble a communal apartment building - are photographs taken by Ilya’s uncle, accompanied by his mother’s memoirs recounting her struggles to survive and to bring up her son during the Soviet era. In the centre of the Labyrinth is a cupboard-like space filled with detritus, and from it emanates an audio recording (which can be heard from the moment one enters the installation) of Ilya singing songs half-remembered from his childhood. • • Said Ilya: “When I think about that world in which my mother’s life passed, what arises in my imagination is a long and semi-dark corridor which is twisted like a labyrinth, where behind each new turn, behind each bend, there is not a bright exit glimmering in the distance, but just the same grubby floor, the same grey, dusty, poorly painted walls illuminated by weak, 40-watt light bulbs.” • • modern @ilyaemiliakabakov
