TATE MODERN - ARTIST AND SOCIETY EXHIBITION . I would be very pleased to announce that our portrait of the @olessentialoilsambassadors quintuplets: . “OL AMBASSADORS” . is now being shown at The Tate Modern, Bankside, London SE1 9TG in their: . ARTIST AND SOCIETY . exhibition on Boiler House Level 2 West. . This wing is concerned with the ways in which artists engage with social ideals and historical realities. . Though some artists associated modernism with a utopian vision, art has also provided a mirror to contemporary society, sometimes raising awareness about urgent issues or arguing for change. . Whether through traditional media or moving images, abstraction or figuration, militancy or detached observation, all the artworks in this wing highlight aspects of the social reality in which they were made, and try to generate a reaction and convey a more or less explicit message to their publics. . Lorna Simpson's ‘Then and Now’ (2016) is now on view in the Artist and Society wing at Tate Modern (@Tate). – In this painting Simpson appropriates images from Ebony magazine in 1967 depicting the Detroit riots of the same year. Layering silkscreened images with washes of monochromatic ink, the work teeters between figuration and abstraction. Senior Curator Mark Godfrey will be talking about Lorna Simpson’s work beside the work tomorrow, Thursday 26 October 2017 at 1.30 pm, to mark Black History Month. – ‘To go through all of these magazines from the Civil Rights era… reveals a very parallel world to the one we are living in now politically. We are still living some of that legacy now.’—Lorna Simpson #ArtistandSociety Image: Lorna Simpson, Then and Now, 2016 © Lorna Simpson
